Quick Online File Virus Scanner

Quick Online File Virus Scanner

Recently I was in reciept of a suspicious email with the subject "UPS Tracking Number 9533844." and since the internet headers of the email did not match with the domain of UPS besides the fact that it was carrying an attachment like UPS_invoice_NR39755.zip with an executable inside alongside my default virus scanner with inbox.com did not flag anything harmful in that. I tried to download it in a separate sandbox folder in my system and have my Symantec Antivirus to scan it. It was indicating a long progress of scanning and then obediently reported as no threats found.

But the concept of an executable inside a zip file besides from an unknown source was still nagging my mind. A quick search of some file virus scanner got me Kaspersky URL where you can upload upto 1 mega byte file. This one reported Packed.Win32.Krap.x in the attachment. The Kaspersky engine showed that it was updated on 13-01-2010 and could spot this.

I just thought of submitting this File Scan URL since it would be a very handy tool to spot and detect viruses when other means of finding the name and intensity of virus fails. For example, I could have forwarded to my Google Mail and have the check done. But Google Mail would not allow executables within zip files even they are harmless and hence using that scanner is out of luck. Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo Mail says there is an infection but not details of the infection.
